Projecto Novas Descobertas

We are so fortunate to have Projecto Novas Descobertas (PND) located in the center of the village, opposite the Sports Club. You may know this place and maybe even have used it to check your internet. PND was started 17 years ago by Nita Barroca and her husband Walt Ludwick. They have shared their knowledge, their building, their resources and hired specialized staff to develop and maintain high quality programming. It is very important to our community. However with the cutbacks in government support this organization is now in jeopardy.

We are turning to the friends of Burgau to help us in this time of need. If we are unable to raise the funds needed to support their programs, PND will be forced to cut some key elements of its programming, such as the athletic running program and the summer activity centre. With your help in this fundraising campaign we can keep the children of Burgau in good hands. All donors will receive a tax receipt. There are options as to how you can make your donation.

Programs That Your Donation Will Support.

1. The Athletic Club

The sports club component will be led by a highly trained and motivated instructor. The program’s main focus is running but will also involve additional opportunities for physical training in other sports. The program will be scheduled for a full twelve months per year and will involve travel to take part in competition. The kids are anticipating this opportunity with great excitement. As we all know, sports instills in us self confidence and positive self worth as well as good physical conditioning.

2. After School Educational Program

In the afternoons the Program Director of PND guides the children in various activities including assistance with homework and special school projects. It is a chance for the kids to talk through issues in their lives with someone trained to listen. The centre boasts a number of computer terminals for research purposes or they can participate in activities such as theatre, creative arts, games and dance. On special days and on some weekends, trips to the farm (also owned by Nita and Walt) are possible where many doors into new experiences are opened such as horticulture, animal care, hiking, cycling and other outdoor activities.

3. Summer Activities

July and August are the busiest times in the Algarve. Every family member that can work is expected to turn to the task of making enough to last the family over the hard times in the winter. With the schools closed for the summer the kids can spend a good part of their day at PND instead of being turned loose on the streets. Activities include many of the same things that are offered during the school year but are complemented with special arts classes in craft and the creative arts, organized beach outings, trips to the Lagos Zoo (a favorite) and the Lagos Science Centre.

Once parental permission is given, the kids get to spend camping time for a week at the farm in Vale da Lama where once again they have a chance to participate in everything from archery to swimming lessons and cycling to organized rock climbing.
